The eyes of the entertainment world will turn to LA’s Nokia Theatre Sunday, June 30, as the BET Awards come to town. A celebration of black music, entertainment and culture, it’s the summer’s hottest ticket going.
New this year is the BET Experience at LA Live, a weekend-long series of performances that is sure to wow those in attendance. When you see the lineup of artists coming to town, you’ll want to be there.
Friday’s performances include Beyoncé, the world’s biggest pop/R&B performer today. She’ll heat up the stage at the Staples Center Friday night, bringing what is sure to be an audio-visual extravaganza to the stage. Also performing Friday night are neo-soul diva Erykah Badu and killer comedian Mike Epps, both of whom will perform at the Club Nokia stage.
If Friday’s lineup is hot, Saturday’s is straight-up sizzling. Performers Saturday include West Coast hip hop icon Snoop Dogg, whose inimitable brand of rhyming has made him a living legend. Joining Snoop at the Staples Center will be Kendrick Lamar, the critically acclaimed hip hop star from Compton. In addition, the Staples Center will host Lamar collaborator/Roc Nation heavyweight J. Cole, Miguel, and Schoolboy Q, while comedic legend Cedric the Entertainer will bring the house down at the Club Nokia stage.
But Saturday’s fun doesn’t stop there. Funk/soul hip hop group The Roots go on for a late-night jam and will be joined by luminaries such as Nelly, MC Lyte and Too Short. Known for their gig as the house band on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and for their scorching live performances, this will be an intimate show at Club Nokia you won’t want to miss.
The big awards ceremony is Sunday night at the Nokia Theatre, but the fun starts at noon at Club Nokia with “Kirk Franklin & Friends,” an urban contemporary gospel experience that’s sure to be as spiritually moving as it is musically inspiring.
Once you’ve come back down to Earth, hit the Staples Center Sunday evening for performances by R&B/pop icons R. Kelly, The Jacksons and New Edition. These living legends will take you back through time as they perform some of their biggest hits.
