Thinking about heading to New York City, but looking to avoid the noise that typically comes with the Fourth of July parades and fireworks?
No problem – in fact, there are some remarkably fun ways to spend your time in and around the city that will truly make this Independence Day special.
Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest
You’ve seen it on TV – now witness it in person in all its gluttonous glory. The Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest has become a Fourth of July institution, pitting contest pits big and small against each other in the quest for hot dog supremacy. Tens of thousands will descend on Nathan’s Famous at Coney Island to watch the men’s and women’s finals. Will anyone be able to top Joey Chestnut’s record of 69 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes?
Hit the beach – Fort Tilden Beach
Located in the Rockaways as part of the 26,000-acre Gateway National Recreation Area, Fort Tilden Beach is part pristine sand and part natural wildlife habitat, but also is home to a handful of fascinating decommissioned military structures. Fish, hike, explore the wildlife, or check out some live theater at the Post Theater. Or, if you prefer, simply relax on the beach.
Toast the fourth with a winery visit
You don’t have to drive far out of Manhattan to taste the bounty New York State wineries have to offer. The state has a long history of making wine (briefly interrupted by Prohibition), and wineries in the Finger Lakes, Cayuga Lake, or Hudson River regions are now producing world-class reds, whites and sparkling wines from a wide range of grape varieties. Pack a picnic lunch or enjoy local fare with your vino – wine country always has a great collection of restaurants.
