For much of the northern hemisphere, this is the prime growing/harvest time when fresh produce is the star of the culinary show. Farmer’s markets flaunt rows of green goodies and grocery stores are filled to overflowing with the favourites we anticipate all year (that first perfect raspberry, peas fresh from the pod). Restaurants, too, shine, especially those with roots in the farm-to-table movement.

Here’s a week’s supply of good farm-to-table eating to complement your next New York City stay.

Hudson Garden Grill at the New York Botanical Garden
2900 Southern Boulevard (Ross Conifer Arboretum)
Open to the public without admission fee to the gardens
Makes perfect sense to eat the freshest local food surrounded by nature. New American cuisine prepared with locally sourced and ethically produced products from family farms, served in a classic, slightly rustic, space panelled with rough sawn wood reclaimed from garden trees that blew over during Hurricane Sandy. Sit at the bar (for an entertaining view of the food preparation), at a inside table, or outside, weather permitting. The views are great regardless of the season.

Bonus: With 28 specialty gardens spread over 250 acres, you’ll want to make time to take a good look around.

Blue Hill New York
75 Washington Place
The urban counterpart of its Massachusetts doppelgänger, Blue Hill restaurant has been a staple in Greenwich Village since 2000. An authentic farm-to-table (in this case, they own the farm AND the table), it sources some of its products from its sister property Blue Hill Farm at the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture as well as other nearby producers.

The restaurant is tucked below street level just off of Washington Square Park. The menu is prix-fixe:  Guests can choose from the four-course Tasting Menu or opt for the Farmer’s Feast, a six-course tasting based on seasonal ingredients.

Dig Inn
11 locations around the city
Their mission is to “build community through food.” This is healthy fast food, casual basics done well with an emphasis on veggies and grains. Whole fresh ingredients are mostly sourced locally (within 300 miles) and regionally (within 600 miles). Meat and dairy are hormone-free, milk is 100% grass fed, fish is sustainably harvested in Alaska, and their eggs are from happy chickens that run free. Founder and CEO Adam Eskin is currently shopping for a farm in upstate NY to call his very own.

Forager’s Table
233 8th Avenue
Chef Nickolas Martinez’s goal is “to transform simple, organic and locally-sourced ingredients into dynamic New American dishes.” Having trained under Alain Ducasse at the Essex House and Joel Robuchon at l’Atelier, his style is French Meets American. He’s owned a farm just outside of the city since 2009, and works with his farmer, Richard Lamb, to grow vegetables and raise chickens that are used both in his restaurant and available for purchase at his Foragers markets.

Rosemary’s
18 Greenwich Avenue
Rosemary’s is an enoteca (wine purveyor) and trattoria (simple, regional Italian food) on the corner of Greenwich and 10th Street in the West Village. Their extensive by the glass list offers the opportunity to sample high-quality everyday wines from Italy’s premier (and hyper-local) winemakers without the commitment of buying an entire bottle. The wines are curated and paired to complement the menu so it’s possible to drink (and eat) your way around Italy without leaving the country. You’ll want to make notes.

Rosemary’s Farm, on 40 acres in the Hudson Valley, is an extension of their 1000 square foot rooftop garden, extending their commitment to supply their kitchen beyond a ‘grow to show.’ Check out the rooftop garden webcam to see what’s growing in real time.

The Fat Radish
17 Orchard Street
A British gastropub in essence, but farm-to-table by food origins, the Fat Radish lives in a reclaimed industrial space at the intersection of Chinatown and the Lower East Side. It boasts a local suppliers list as long as your arm.

It offers lunch, brunch and dinner from a tightly-curated menu: half a dozen items each of snack, appetizers, clever lunch salads and one-of main plates drawing from burgers, fish, pork, chicken, duck and vegetarian offerings.

If you like the eatery, you can buy the book: The Fat Radish (published by Rizzoli).

ABC Kitchen
35 East 18th Street, Manhattan
ABC is another star in the global constellation of prolific (and Michelin-starred) chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, who has 10 restaurants in New York City alone. Located inside ABC Carpet and Home (died and gone to heaven!), J-G designed an installed a rooftop garden for micro-greens and herbs to augment his local suppliers. As expected, his focus is on free’s and no’s: no GMOs, no imports, and free of antibiotics, hormones, pesticides and unhealthy fats or additives. Brunch, lunch and dinner served.
