The pinnacle of the professional tennis season is the US Open, which takes place from August 26 to September 9. Being the last of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the year, it’s the final chance for the giants of the game to stay on top — or for a new challenger to be born.
The US Open has been going in some shape or form since 1881, but has really come into its own since it moved to the open era in 1968 and then to the zipper hard courts in the late 1970s. What used to be a somewhat stuffy, members-only event played on grass courts in Rhode Island, is now a fun, fast-paced fortnight of tennis at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
On the men’s side, recent Wimbledon champ Andy Murray comes in to this year’s tournament as the defending champion and inevitable favorite. That’s not to count out usual heavyweights such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who will all be looking to unseat Murray and climb back up the rankings.
Serena Williams returns to Flushing Meadows as defending champion on the women’s side, and with a number of potential challengers for the title, including Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli as well as Maria Sharapova and, of course, Serena’s own sister Venus.
Whether you prefer watching matches on the side courts during preliminary rounds or would rather get comfy at Arthur Ashe Stadium for some of the big names, the energy on the court and throughout the crowd is unbeatable.
When staying in New York, getting to the tournament couldn’t be easier. The 7 Train comes and goes from Times Square frequently, and stops at the Billie Jean King national Tennis Center. This means you can stay at Magellan Luxury Hotels’ favorite properties, enjoying first-rate amenities and exclusive perks in our New York City partner hotels while attending the US Open.
